Midlife exercise specifically increases the production of "cathepsin B," a protein that travels from muscles to the brain to stimulate memory-related gene expression. I find this empowering because it proves our muscles act as a pharmacy, dispensing brain-protecting medicine even if we start later in life.

Love this insight—thank you for sharing it. The idea that our muscles act like a pharmacy for the brain is incredibly empowering, especially for anyone who thinks it’s “too late” to start. Movement really is medicine.
